Passenger Car Production and Sales in China Exceed 13 Million in H1 2025
In the first half of 2025, China's passenger car production and sales exceeded 13 million units for the first time, with a year-on-year growth rate of over 13%, indicating a strong growth momentum. The market landscape shows that domestic brands are leading, new energy vehicles are dominating, and there is a significant differentiation among tiers. The sales rankings for this period are as follows: First place, BYD Auto with 2,113,271 units sold; second place, Geely Holding Group with 1,558,969 units; third place, Volkswagen Group with 1,239,294 units; fourth place, Chery Holding with 1,214,911 units; fifth place, Changan Automobile with 852,385 units; sixth place, Toyota Motor with 718,434 units; seventh place, SAIC-GM-Wuling with 607,741 units; eighth place, Great Wall Motors with 473,489 units; ninth place, SAIC Group with 403,961 units; and tenth place, Tesla with 364,474 units. BYD, with a domestic sales volume of 2.113 million, achieved a year-on-year growth of 31.5%, maintaining its leading position with a significant advantage, highlighting its systemic strengths in three electric technologies, vertical supply chain, and product matrix. On July 21, BYD held a ceremony at its Shenzhen factory for the rollout of its 13 millionth new energy vehicle, becoming the world's first automaker to reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Geely, Volkswagen, and Chery form the second tier with sales of 1.559 million, 1.239 million, and 1.215 million units, respectively, with fierce competition and a market share gap of less than 3 percentage points. According to data from the Automotive Research Institute, the dominance of domestic brands in the passenger car market continues to strengthen, with a sales share exceeding 68% in the first half of the year, and seven out of the top ten brands by sales are domestic brands, demonstrating strong market competitiveness.
