Covestro Launches New Flame-Retardant Polyurethane Foam Technology for EV Battery Safety
Covestro, a high-performance polymer materials manufacturer, has launched its next-generation flame-retardant encapsulation polyurethane foam technology, Baysafe® BEF, aimed at addressing one of the critical challenges in the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs): battery safety. As the largest electric vehicle market in the world, China has made a decisive step by introducing the national standard 'Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles' (GB 38031—2025), which will take effect in July 2026. This standard mandates that batteries must not catch fire or explode even in the event of thermal runaway. These stringent requirements are expected to shape global safety standards in the coming years.
