In a market dominated by new energy and electrification, SAIC Audi has launched a striking fuel-powered model, the new A5L Sportback, on August 1st. Priced starting at 259,900 yuan, the vehicle will offer a limited-time cash discount of 4,000 yuan for users purchasing the luxury version, the exclusive quattro version, the intelligent leading version, and the intelligent leading quattro version within 90 days of its launch. Additionally, customers choosing the luxury model will receive a complimentary front-row comfort package upgrade worth 15,000 yuan, which includes features such as seat ventilation, heating, massage functions, steering wheel heating, and welcome projection.
In the current domestic luxury car market, intelligence has become a core competitive factor often associated with electrification. However, many consumers still have doubts about the range, charging convenience, and driving habits of electric vehicles, which is one of the reasons for the market share of new energy vehicles being lower than that of fuel vehicles. In the first quarter of this year, the penetration rate of fuel vehicles reached 57%. SAIC Audi has keenly captured this contradiction: users are enamored with the mechanical feel and mature power of fuel vehicles while desiring cutting-edge intelligent experiences. To address this, SAIC Audi has broken the 'oil-electric opposition' mindset, launching a new generation of intelligent fuel vehicles with comprehensive evolution in power systems, chassis platforms, and overall vehicle architecture— the new A5L Sportback.
To achieve superior performance, the A5L Sportback is equipped with the new fifth-generation EA888 engine, paired with a new MHEV super mild hybrid system and VTG variable geometry turbo. The new MHEV system allows the A5L Sportback to cover some electric vehicle scenarios, such as low-speed pure electric driving mode, remote vehicle control, and uninterrupted air conditioning operation while parked. The VTG technology, known for its importance in Porsche's power technology, provides the vehicle with robust power and quicker response times.
The A5L Sportback is built on Audi's latest PPC vehicle architecture, designed specifically for luxury fuel vehicles with longitudinal engines, enhancing intelligence and electrification levels. The new model features a front and rear five-link independent suspension and a progressive steering system, alongside a new generation CDC sports suspension system and quattro intelligent all-wheel drive system, providing a smarter and more comfortable driving experience.
Traditionally, intelligence has been seen as a privilege of electric vehicles, limiting the innovation pace of traditional luxury brands. However, SAIC Audi responds to this stereotype with the A5L Sportback, proving that an equivalent level of intelligent experience can be offered regardless of the drive type. As the first high-end fuel model equipped with Huawei's QianKun intelligent driving system, the A5L Sportback boasts two laser radars, twelve high-definition cameras, six millimeter-wave radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, offering advanced features like city navigation assistance, complex ramp merging and exiting, and 120-meter tracking reverse.
Notably, the PPC platform utilized by the A5L Sportback incorporates the E³ 1.2 electronic architecture, which enhances data transmission speed and functionality through distributed domain control, ensuring the vehicle can receive future system upgrades. Inside the cabin, the A5L Sportback features an 11.9-inch display and a 14.5-inch central control screen forming a high-definition 3D curved display, in addition to a 10.9-inch screen for the passenger. The model is also equipped with an adjustable PDLC panoramic sunroof, luxury sports integrated seats, and a BANG & OLUFSEN 3D audio system, highlighting its high-end features.
The launch of the A5L Sportback challenges the long-standing notion that fuel vehicles lack intelligence, showcasing SAIC Audi's commitment to a long-term vision of technology openness and collaborative success, irrespective of fuel type. The design of the A5L Sportback continues the classic design language of the A5 series, retaining the core features of the European A5, with a family signature polygonal grille, hatchback tailgate, and frameless doors. To cater to domestic consumer needs, the new model has an extended wheelbase for enhanced rear passenger space. The design also draws inspiration from Audi's high-performance RS series, featuring a sporty stance, specific aerodynamic elements, and RS-style wheel designs, linking the A5 series with performance aesthetics.
In summary, the introduction of the SAIC Audi A5L Sportback is not merely a continuation of tradition but intends to explore a new evolutionary path for luxury fuel vehicles in the current market environment. As emphasized by SAIC Volkswagen's general manager at the launch event, modern fuel vehicles must possess stunning design and powerful performance while meeting the demands of the times, ensuring that users who appreciate mechanical quality do not have regrets when choosing a fuel vehicle. Currently, the luxury version, exclusive quattro version, intelligent leading version, and intelligent leading quattro version of the A5L Sportback have already begun deliveries, while the higher-end flagship and flagship intelligent versions are scheduled for delivery in November this year.
