University of Alberta Researchers Develop High-Performance Water-Based Batteries
According to foreign media reports, engineering researchers at the University of Alberta have found a way to make rechargeable, environmentally friendly water-based batteries outperform existing batteries. The concept of batteries using water-based electrolyte solutions, as opposed to organic solvents used in lithium batteries, has been around since the 19th century. The lead-acid 'water-based' battery, used to start most internal combustion engine vehicles, was invented in 1859 and is still in use today. However, the energy density, voltage, and storage capacity of water-based batteries have not been sufficient to power electric vehicles or adequately store energy generated by renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines.
