Tesla has officially announced the upcoming launch of its new 6-seat SUV, the Model Y L, through its Weibo account. The vehicle is part of the recently published list by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which includes Tesla's fully electric multi-purpose passenger vehicle. The Model Y L is approximately 4,976 mm long, positioned between the existing Model Y and Model X. This new model aims to cater to the growing demand for spacious family vehicles, especially as the percentage of families with two or more children in China has reached 33.7% by the end of 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The demand for 6-seat SUVs has surged, with many brands like Li Auto, NIO, Lynk & Co, and Denza planning to release over a dozen models in 2025 alone.
The Model Y L boasts an extended range, generous space, and upgraded interiors, marking Tesla's return to innovation in the competitive 6-seat SUV market. As the segment heats up, consumers are increasingly prioritizing comfort and advanced technology in their purchasing decisions. Industry experts note that the new Model Y L will significantly enhance Tesla’s product lineup in China, where it has already seen success with the Model 3 and Model Y, which have sold over 300,000 units globally.
With Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory producing more than 950,000 units annually, the Model Y L is expected to be a key player in solidifying Tesla's position in the Chinese market. This model will be launched later in the third quarter, with a projected starting price around 400,000 yuan. As competitors like NIO and Li Auto also prepare to release their 6-seat offerings, the battle for market share in this lucrative segment is set to intensify.
