According to Reuters, on July 22, Stellantis, the world's fourth-largest automotive manufacturer, announced plans to start selling electric vehicles developed by its partner, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor, in South Africa from September this year. The first model will be the Leapmotor C10 mid-size SUV. The C10 is an electric SUV, with some models featuring a gasoline engine solely used for battery charging. Mike Whitfield, Stellantis's General Manager for South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, stated that the company expects to launch more Leapmotor models, including pure electric vehicles, in South Africa by 2026. Additionally, Leapmotor's recently launched pure electric B10 SUV has garnered widespread attention, featuring advanced driver-assistance functions and lidar technology, priced under $18,000. In 2023, Stellantis acquired a 21% stake in Leapmotor for $1.6 billion and holds a 51% stake in the joint venture Leapmotor International. Leapmotor will assist Stellantis in expanding its lineup of affordable electric vehicles while advancing its electrification process. Other Chinese automakers, such as BYD and Chery, are also actively expanding into Africa. Mike Whitfield emphasized, 'South Africa is a key market for Stellantis, and we are committed to unlocking potential through products, innovation, and partnerships.' Stellantis entered the South African market four years ago and is currently building a new factory in the country, aiming for a maximum production capacity of 100,000 vehicles by 2030. The company plans to become the leading automotive manufacturer in the Middle East and Africa by 2030, targeting sales of 1 million vehicles, with 35% expected to be electric. In 2024, Stellantis aims to sell 500,000 vehicles in the Middle East and Africa. Whitfield noted that over 60% of the South African automotive market is concentrated in the price range below 400,000 South African Rand (approximately $22,755). In this context, the Citroën C3 series under Stellantis has shown strong market performance, with the upcoming C3 Basalt model set to launch early next year, further enhancing the competitive product matrix in the B-segment hatchback and SUV market. Stellantis will also introduce the Citroën C3 Hola van to enter the growing commercial vehicle sector, targeting small business owners.
