As of June 30, 2025, the total number of motor vehicles in China reached 460 million, including 359 million cars. The number of motor vehicle drivers has also grown to 550 million, with 515 million of them being car drivers. In the first half of 2025, 16.88 million new motor vehicles were registered, and 12.58 million new drivers obtained their licenses. The new registrations of cars increased to 12.5 million, marking a year-on-year growth of 0.68%. The total number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) registered has reached 36.89 million, with 5.622 million new registrations in the first half of the year alone, reflecting a significant year-on-year growth of 27.86%, the highest in history. NEVs accounted for 44.97% of all new car registrations. There are currently 101 cities in China with over one million cars, and 27 cities have more than three million cars. Notable cities such as Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing have car ownership exceeding six million, while Suzhou, Zhengzhou, Shanghai, and Xi'an have over five million. The used car market remains active, with 19.77 million vehicle transfer registrations processed nationwide in the first half of 2025, including 18.38 million for cars, a 13.05% increase year-on-year. Additionally, 3.081 million used cars were registered for cross-province transactions, showcasing the success of reforms aimed at facilitating second-hand car circulation. The number of motor vehicle drivers has reached 550 million, with online services for vehicle and driver's license transactions reaching 53.95 million. The 'Traffic Management 12123' app has issued 328 million electronic driver's licenses and 199 million electronic vehicle licenses.
