Xiaomi’s founder, chairman, and CEO, Lei Jun, took to Weibo today to address two key questions from the public regarding the company’s upcoming YU7 SUV.
Question 1: Is there more confidence in the YU7 launch compared to the SU7 last year?
Lei Jun’s Answer: “This time, our confidence is indeed stronger. The enthusiasm from users after the YU7 technical presentation last month far exceeded our expectations. The number of users who have registered their interest in the YU7 is three times that of the SU7 during the same period. I expect the YU7 to be as popular as the SU7.”
Question 2: Is the Xiaomi YU7 just a ‘lifted’ version of the SU7?
Lei Jun’s Answer: “I can tell you for sure, it is not! Although the YU7 and SU7 are both developed on the Xiaomi Modena platform, 90% of the components for the YU7 project were newly developed. In terms of driving style, the YU7 leans a bit more towards comfort on top of its sporty foundation. Everyone will feel the different styles of the YU7 and SU7 after a test drive.”
Xiaomi is scheduled to hold a new product launch event this Thursday, June 26th, at 7 PM, where the YU7 will be officially launched.
Previously, Lei Jun had addressed why Xiaomi’s first SUV wasn’t a popular six-seater model. He explained that the ‘S’ in SUV stands for Sport, and Xiaomi’s goal was to build a true sports SUV. “The YU7 is not an ordinary, mediocre boxy SUV,” he said. “It’s a luxury high-performance SUV that balances daily luxury and comfort with ample space.” He added that while features like “TVs, refrigerators, and big sofas” are in demand in the new energy era, the driver’s experience should not be overlooked, and the YU7 is designed to deliver on both performance and comfort.
